Since January, at least 12 victims have fallen prey to a series of scams promoting fixed deposit schemes with high interest rates, resulting in losses amounting to S$650,000. According to the Police, scammers would first lure their victims with promotional SMSes featuring the high interest rates. When victims call them back using the number provided in the SMSes, the scammers will then pose as bank agents to persuade victims to provide personal information for the opening of new bank accounts as part of the promotion. Victims would be instructed to deposit or transfer money into these accounts, and not verify the accounts by claiming that they were only meant to “hold” funds before account creation, or that there was an “activation period”. The victims’ monies would then be transferred out of the accounts by the scammers. We are pleased to announce the appointment of Adaline Zheng as the new Chief Executive Officer of UOB Hong Kong Branch.
