The higher-than-expected US inflation reading of 3.5% year-on-year, and heightened geopolitical risks in the Middle East, helped push safe-haven assets (namely the US Dollar and Gold) higher. The US Dollar Index closed above the 106-level for the first time since November 2023 while Gold reached a new 52-week high last week. Conversely, profit-taking in US equities saw the S&P500 and Nasdaq close the week lower by 1.56% and 0.45% respectively. The US Treasury 10-year yield climbed by 0.12% to close above the 4.50%-level as monetary policy easing expectations was pushed back slightly. Looking ahead, the Middle East conflict will remain in focus alongside key economic data releases including the US Core Retail Sales and Initial Jobless Claims, as well as China’s 1Q GDP results.
