The story of Jumia Group can not be completed without mentioning Tunde Kehinde and his partner, Raphael Afaedor.
They are key reasons why Jumia trades in NYSE today and their story should be told to inspire a new generation of African entrepreneurs.
Today, meet Tunde Kehinde, co-founder of Lidya, a branchless internet bank easing small business credit gap.
Founded in 2016, Lidya has grown to have teams in Portugal and the US and they are the leading digital financier of SMEs in Nigeria.
Tunde has previously co-founded the logistics startup, ACE - Africa Courier Express. A company addressing the infrastructural challenges preventing companies from connecting with their customers.
Tunde and his team have digitized and and have disbursed over $100m in credit across over 32,500 loans to customers, with 1% default rates.
However, as they continued to scale, they realized that no matter how aggressive they were in giving credit to customers, the demand for credit (Over $300bn credit gap in Nigeria alone) could not be satisfied by one lender.
With this in mind, they opened their credit infrastructure to allow any business seeking to give credit to;
1. acquire customers
2. originate loans
3. collect digital credit
This shows that Tunde and his team fully understand the problems in digital lending and they are using their expertise to help credit providers resolve blocks and achieve revenue growth.
Furthermore, Lidya has shifted its focus from a lender to a credit enabler, providing financial institutions with the technological infrastructure to originate, manage, and collect loans.
This has helped lenders to deploy a wide variety of loans faster, with a higher repayment rate and, importantly, great after-sales service.
Tunde and his team are working toward their goal, which is to build a future where every African has access to fair and fast funding.
