At the core of humanitarian responses are the very local actors who are usually the first responders. Despite the challenges they face, they're committed to serve their communities, host or refugees, #NoMatterWhat! The local actors who are the closest to the humanitarian problems are often at least one step removed from the necessary resources. TekSHOI - Technology in Social Humanitarian and Open Innovation - an initiative by BetterStories Limited - is working to bring the local actors back at the centre stage, which is rightfully theirs. TekSHOI is a Humanitarian Innovation Convening Lab that has recently won a challenge fund by GKI-Global Knowledge Initiative and USAID. In this journey of TekSHOI we have been building partnerships with organizations like Start Fund Bangladesh, Chaldal, Journalist Union in Cox’s Bazar and local actors themselves. The disquieting reality exists that, as we've just come from celebrating Madiba Day, 3 out of every 10 South Africans live in extreme poverty, defined as living on less than R35 a day. We know this because we’re refreshing our understanding of how South Africa is performing against the 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. We are updating our grip on the facts because Empanda is partnering with the Global Compact Network South Africa to facilitate the South African private sector 2024 Voluntary National Review (VNR) of action to deliver the 2030 Agenda. We are so excited about this hugely valuable initiative. The ‘poverty line’ idea made us wonder what the role of business is beyond individual philanthropy. One big idea is that those of us with jobs within our economy must think about what we can do to generate sustainable employment for the most vulnerable. Do you have an idea? During the launching ceremony of Bangladesh America Maitree Project, Asif Saleh focused on the need for facilitating locally-led and locally-driven development in Bangladesh. The five-year, $48 million initiative will advance and facilitate locally-led development in Bangladesh. Bangladeshi development organizations will have an opportunity to strengthen their organizational and programmatic capacities by accessing funding in sectors such as agriculture, health, governance, education, and humanitarian response. In addition, the project will support organizations to strengthen their networks for knowledge dissemination, sharing lessons and successes, and bolstering civil society in Bangladesh.
