The Association of Banks in Malaysia welcomes Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation Malaysia Berhad as its 24th member

Kuala Lumpur, Monday, 27 June 2011 - Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation Malaysia Berhad (SMBC) has joined The Association of Banks in Malaysia (ABM) as its 24th member. SMBC is the 15th locally incorporated international bank operating in Malaysia under ABM’s list of member banks.

“We warmly welcome SMBC to the Association and Malaysia,” said Chuah Mei Lin, Executive Director of ABM. “With its long-standing history and expertise in banking, we are confident that SMBC will make an impactful presence in the commercial banking sector. We look forward to working with them on issues affecting our members and the commercial banking industry.”

The Association of Banks in Malaysia was formed in November 1973 with the primary objective of establishing and promoting a sound banking system in Malaysia in cooperation and consultation with Bank Negara Malaysia. Its members comprise the 24 commercial banks that currently operate in Malaysia.

ABM aims to facilitate, and create a conducive banking environment while promoting orderliness, and ethical banking practices. ABM also pursues wide-ranging issues to assist the industry in its efforts to remain competitive.
