The Association Of Banks In Malaysia Names Maybank Chief Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid Omar As New Chairman
Kuala Lumpur, May 27th 2009 - The Association of Banks in Malaysia (ABM) today announced the appointment of its new chairman. Maybank Group President and Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid Omar has been appointed to helm the Association for the term 2009-2010.

He succeeded Dato’ Sri Abdul Hamidy Abdul Hafiz who completed his term as ABM Chairman effective March 31st 2009 following his retirement as Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of  Affin Bank Berhad.

Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid is a well-respected member of the corporate community. Prior to his appointment as Maybank’s top banker on May 1st 2008, he was Group CEO for Telekom Malaysia Berhad since 2004.

ABM Executive Director Chuah Mei Lin lauded Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid’s appointment as timely, adding that his vast experience would be of great benefit to the Association’s efforts to foster greater public and stakeholder confidence in the banking system under the  challenging economic environment.

“I thank the ABM Council Members for their confidence in me and pledge to do my very best in addressing the many issues facing the banking industry,” says the new ABM Chairman.

“On behalf of the Association, I would also like to put on record our deepest appreciation and gratitude to Dato’ Sri Abdul Hamidy who has worked tirelessly and selflessly as chairman from 2006.”

“Dato’ Sri Abdul Hamidy has moved on to greater challenges to further augment his illustrious career as the inaugural chairman of Malaysia’s first financial guarantee institution Danajamin Nasional Berhad. We thank him for his invaluable service and guidance to ABM and wish him all the best,” Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid said.
